Sliding Scale Memberships
EQUAL intends to implement a sliding scale of membership fees for our community. This is done to intentionally level the field for people from diverse sectors and geographies who have different experiences and opportunities. The annual fees are designed to maximize participation and ensure that marginalized voices have access to the resources available on the platform.
Access Partner
Lowest tier membership plan.
The Access Partner membership is our basic plan, which supports individual memberships from small NGOs, Global South organizations, grassroots initiatives, undergraduate students, and other low income circumstances to participate in the EQUAL Platform.
Collaborator
Mid tier mermbship plan.
The Collaborator membership supports higher income contexts such as Global North grassroots organizations, funded PhD students, mid-sized NGOs, Global South academic centers and regional groups. Examples of this tier might include the Weill Cornell Women in Global Health Research Initiative (WGHRI), South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), the UCL Centre for Gender and Global Health, Gender Violence and Health Centre at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, or Black Thrive Global.
Catalyst
Upper mid tier membership plan.
The Catalyst membership includes national level organizations, Global North academic departments, research centers, think-tanks, and existing networks. Examples of this tier might include the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the WHO Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Women's Health and Gender Equity, or the Harvard GenderSci Lab.
Champions
Top tier membership plan.
The Champion membership is our highest tier. Examples of organizations which fall within this tier include charitable foundations, philanthropic institutions, social impact investors like Deloitte Global Health Care, and other private sector entities which have an interest in women's health, health equity and gender equality.
Platinum Partners
Sponsorship plan.
Platinum Partners have the opportunity to sponsor Access Partners with membership to the platform. This tier of membership supports membership fees for people from around the world who's financial circumstances do not permit EQUAL's annual fees. These sponsorships are essential to supporting equitable participation on the platform, and encouraging a diversity of sectors and perspectives. Platinum Partners are featured on the EQUAL website and highlighted in our reviews.
FAQs
Why does EQUAL use a sliding-scale system?
-
Our Membership scale is based on the understanding that inequalities influence the financial opportunities of our members' community. Many organizations from the Global North have the financial flexibility and freedom to commit to annual fees with minimal impact on their operations, but many do not. EQUAL aims to take this into account to promote cross sector and international dialogues regardless of financial position.
How does the tiered structure work?
-
We ask higher income organizations and individuals to contribute fees proportional to their circumstances, and in turn support the fees of lower income memberships. We assess the financial position and geographical location of organizations to allocate them to a tier. This is done intentionally to ensure equitable access to the platform and its resources for all.
How will EQUAL use membership fees?
-
Our goal is to sustain this Network for years to come. Annual fees and fundraising efforts will purchase our platform subscription, pay stipends for our volunteers, speakers and leadership. Platinum Partners commit to sponsoring membership fees for low-income Access Partners.
